Brooklyn Democrats nominate court candidates

The Kings County Democratic Party Judicial Convention, which officially nominated twelve candidates to run on the party ticket in the 2022 election for New York State Supreme Court justice, was recently presided over by Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn. The convention was held at Marine Park Golf Course in South Brooklyn. The twelve nominees from various backgrounds will participate in the next general elections in 2022.

The Democratic candidates are:

Hon. Patria Frias Colon– First ever elected judge from the Dominican Republic in Kings County history. Queens County Civil Court Supervising Judge Frias-Colon has just been appointed. She worked in Kings County Civil Court from 2020 to present.

Hon. Cenceria P. Edwards– The Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York for the civil term has been appointed.

Hon. Cheryl J. Gonzales– Since 2005, the supervising judge has presided over the Kings County Housing Court in New York.

Hon. Lorna J. McAllister– a Jamaican-born woman whose legal career began in 2008 when she served as the candidate’s lead attorney

Hon. Aaron D. Maslow– Lawyer Aaron Maslow has been practicing for about 40 years. He has served as an administrative law judge in New York and has represented numerous candidates in electoral law cases.

Hon. Dweynie E. Paul– When presumably elected, the first Haitian-American justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York was in Kings County.

Hon. Weird Susan– An elected judge of Kings County Civil Court who currently sits in family court. She began her public service career in 1998 as a paralegal for the Kings County Attorney’s Office.

Hon. Robin K. Sheares– Sheares is an acting judge of the Supreme Court of Kings County (civil retainer) in the Second Judicial District of New York. Sheares began his legal career as a New York City Civil Court Judge in 2008.

Hon. Ellen M. Spodek– Elected to the Supreme Court in 2009 and served as Acting Administrative Judge in 2020.

Hon. Anne J. Swern– Swern, who is currently employed by the New York Civil Court, previously worked for nearly 35 years as an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, where she was chosen by four independently elected district attorneys. In addition, she teaches at Brooklyn Law School.

Hon. Richards Velasquez— began working on the Kings County Supreme Court Civil Warrant in 2019.

Hon. Craig S. Walker– Currently serves as the Acting Judge of the Youth Division of the Supreme Court of Kings County.
