Deadline Detroit | Trump and the DeVos family support competing Michigan GOP candidates. Who will win?

Betsy DeVos and President Trump in friendlier times.

Betsy DeVos worked as President Donald Trump’s Education Secretary until the day after Jan. 6, 2021, when she resigned with a letter saying “there is no doubt about the impact of your rhetoric” on the Capitol Riot.

Needless to say, there is little love between the two.

Now, Trump has endorsed nine GOP candidates for the state Legislature for the August primary. Two prominent political action committees tied to the DeVos family, the Michigan Freedom Network and the Great Lakes Education Project, are supporting candidates competing in eight of the contests, one reviewed by Detroit News broadcasts.

The endorsements are likely to test Trump’s power against the influence of DeVos and his family, who have played prominent roles in Republican politics in the state.

Interestingly, DeVos and his family endorsed Tudor Dixon for governor in the Aug. 2 primary.

When speaking at a rally in Macomb County in April, Trump only mentioned Dixon, and in a flattering way. He said nothing about the other gubernatorial candidates.

“Now we have a gubernatorial candidate who is very popular, who is a fantastic and brilliant candidate, Tudor Dixon,” he said. “Thank you, Tudor, I heard you were fine.”

Still, Trump has yet to endorse Dixon or any other GOP nominee in this race. And it’s unclear whether DeVos’ endorsement will prevent Trump from endorsing Dixon.
