KISUMU, Kenya, 19 June – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called on party candidates to step down and campaign as a team in Nyanza following a surge of independent candidates in the area.

The party’s political affairs secretary, Opiyo Wandayi, said those who received nomination certificates and were cleared by the IEBC to run for different positions should step out of their comfort zone and campaign.

Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Saturday, Wandayi said those not ready to campaign should return party tickets.

He said some candidates were hiding behind party dominance while their independent counterparts engaged in aggressive campaigning to promote their candidacies.

Wandayi, who is the MP for Ugunja in Siaya County, said the party needed strong campaigns to win all the seats in the region.

He said the party considers those they have issued tickets to run coordinated campaigns in the region.

The ODM has come under increasing criticism for chaotic nominations, with the party’s decision to opt for direct nominations angering some members who often choose to compete on independent tickets.
