Onondaga County Legislative Assembly GOP majority speeds up redistribution process despite Democrats’ protests

The GOP majority in the Onondaga County Legislature passed last-minute agenda items on Tuesday that appear to be speeding up the redistribution process. Democrats have questioned the timing and ethics of party line voting.

President Dave Knapp defended the decision, which bypassed the typical committee process to get on Tuesday’s agenda. He says they have been talking about it for over a year.

“As soon as the census data arrives in September, according to the charter, the time starts. We have to go. It won’t happen until the election. We are just starting the process.”

Democratic Redistribution Commissioner Dustin Czarny disagrees.

“We have six months to begin this process, according to the charter, and we have until February 2023 to complete it. the Democrats are taking control. “

The two election commissioners sit on the six-member redistribution commission. Czarny says it’s not even a good time to start the process.

“We have an election in less than 30 days, and we will certify that election until Thanksgiving. I don’t know how we can make this work and get some good fair cards.”

Democratic lawmaker Chris Ryan tried … and failed last year to convince his GOP colleagues to adopt an independent, non-partisan redistribution process. He says the executive and legislative branches are absorbed into other affairs as well.

“We were in the middle of the budget season, and we’re up against a $ 15 million broadband initiative, a $ 25 million sports complex, an $ 85 million aquarium. I don’t know if that is. is the right time to do it. “

Fellow Democrat Bill Kinne has said lawmakers opposite know they are wrong to perpetuate a partisan redistribution process.

“I really hoped this Parliament would have the guts and the guts not to start over. You might have the right to do it. It might be legal. But it’s definitely not ethical.”

President Dave Knapp attributed the turmoil to the political time of year, when people are putting holes in everything. All legislative seats are up for grabs. Lawmakers and the county executive will appoint the remaining commission members by Friday. An organizational meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday.
