Welsh politicians have called for lower fuel taxes in the Chancellor’s Spring Statement next week. Petrol prices have climbed 13p since the start of the month and diesel by almost 21p – the fastest rises on record.
The AA says this means that between mid-February and mid-March the cost of filling a typical 55-litre car tank rose from £81.73 to £90.97.
The Welsh Tories said a cut could help protect family budgets, but a group of motorists questioned whether it would be fully passed on.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will announce his spring statement on Wednesday, and the government says it has frozen fuel duties for 12 consecutive years.
Welsh Tory Peter Fox, finance spokesman and MP for Monmouth, said: “Welsh Tories believe the Chancellor’s Spring Statement provides the right opportunity to protect the increasingly tight budget of families and businesses, and this can be done by a gradual reduction in fuel duty.”
The high costs mean it’s worth hunting for the best prices when looking to refuel your car – supermarket forecourts usually offer the cheapest fuel prices. This is due to the market power of supermarkets – the big names like Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons all compete with each other, so they keep fuel prices as low as possible in the hope that when motorists come to fill their tank, they could do their weekly grocery shopping too.
