San Jose council member Matt Mahan announces mayor’s campaign – NBC Bay Area

San Jose City Council member Matt Mahan on Saturday announced his campaign to run for mayor of San Jose, with the promise of bringing a “common sense revolution.”

At a press conference at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, Mahan said he wanted to use unused government land to end homelessness in San Jose. Budgeting for existing funds and public land could reduce the costs of affordable housing, which can cost as much as $ 850,000 per door, he said.

“We have the land, we have the existing funds and we have a growing supply of affordable modular units that could be used to safely house the entire homeless population of San José living on the streets,” Mahan said. during the conference.

Mahan said his job at city hall showed him the dysfunction of local government, and he hopes to bring a “city hall wake-up call” with his previous experience of building technology platforms for voters. .

“Too often government works for government – with little accountability, inherent inefficiencies and almost no incentive to do better. My campaign aims to demand responsibility, efficiency and innovation. It’s about demanding a common sense revolution because we deserve better, ”Mahan said.
