RICHMOND, Virginia (WWBT) – As the New Years holidays approach, Checkpoint Strikeforce is launching a campaign to educate the public about the dangers of drinking and driving, especially during the holiday season.

Governor Northam spoke about this public education campaign.

“Keep yourself, your family, and your community safe by avoiding drunk driving during the holiday season,” Northam said. “You can always appoint a sober driver, call a taxi, or use public transport and carpooling services. We owe our thanks to law enforcement professionals for keeping people safe this holiday season. Together we can reduce impaired driving and save lives.

In 2020, Virginia lost 272 lives in alcohol-related crashes. However, alcohol-related crashes were down 41.2%, fatalities were down 24%, and injuries were cut in half.

Virginia State Police will be working while on vacation as part of Operation CARE – the accident awareness reduction effort. 116 law enforcement agencies in Virginia will participate in the campaign from December 15 to New Years’ Day.

Law enforcement agencies will increase their police presence in high-risk areas and establish 55 sobriety checkpoints across the Commonwealth.
