UP Assembly polls: Priyanka Gandhi campaigns aggressively in Aligarh


Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday aggressively campaigned in Aligarh for the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, calling on people to vote for the party’s candidates. The Congress leader received a warm welcome as people showered her with flower petals.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka conducted a door-to-door campaign in Khair Assembly constituency in Aligarh. “Congress comes to meet UP expectations,” tweeted the official Congress Twitter account with photos of Priyanka greeting the people of Aligarh.

While campaigning in Sahibabad and Ghaziabad on Friday, Priyanka had said that for the first time in 30 years the Congress was running for all UP Assembly seats. However, Uttar Pradesh Congress star activist Sachin Pilot previously told ANI that out of ‘political courtesy’ the party did not field any candidate against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle. Shivpal Singh Yadav justifying that the SP did not present any candidate against Sonia Gandhi, when she contested from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in the state earlier.

Sonia Gandhi was elected Lok Sabha MP from Rae Bareli’s seat in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. Samajwadi party leader Akhilesh Yadav is a candidate for the UP’s Karhal assembly seat, while his uncle who leads the Pragatisheel Samajwadi (Lohia) party Shivpal Singh Yadav is contesting from the seat of Jaswant Nagar.

Notably, the Samajwadi party had also failed to field its assembly seat candidate Amethi against Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. the second phase on February 14, the third phase on February 20, the fourth phase on February 23, the fifth phase on February 27, the sixth phase on March 3 and the seventh phase on March 7.
