COLUMBIA, MO (KMIZ)
With primary elections in Missouri next week, ABC 17 News takes a look at some of the candidates vying for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO).
ABC 17 spoke with Republican hopeful Vicky Hartzler about her campaign and her vision for Missouri.
Since 2011, Representative Hartzler has occupied Missouri’s 4th district in the United States House of Representatives.
The six-term congresswoman has been a strong advocate for Missouri police, military and farmers.
Missouri’s 4th District is historically a Democratic home seat.
Ike Skelton held the seat for 17 terms before a former Missouri House member ran for the Republican nomination and defeated Skelton in the general election.
With the win in 2010, Hartzler became the first Republican to hold the seat since 1955.
“The incumbent has made contact and they have ceased to represent our values,” Rep. Hartzler said.
Now the Archie, Mo. native is in for a hotly contested race in the final days of this campaign leg.
“We’re going to win this seat, we’re going to take back control of the Senate, and we’re going to save our county,” Rep. Hartzler said.
Currently, Hartzler serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Agriculture Committee since arriving in Washington in 2011.
“I go out to my district all the time and listen to them, and then I go back to Washington and fight for them,” Rep. Hartzler said.
Hartzler is currently endorsed by the Farm Bureau and former U.S. Senator Kit Bond, among others.
Some of the candidates hoped for an endorsement from the former president. Hartzler, however, isn’t worried that she didn’t.
“I am very grateful for the support of Missourians who know me, and I appreciate what Senator Josh Hawley said when he endorsed me,” Rep. Hartzler said.
When it comes to Missouri, the congresswoman knows exactly what she wants to focus on immediately if she wins the seat.
“Well, we need energy independence in the county. And gas prices are skyrocketing and we can reverse that by starting to drill and embracing the energy we have here. We need to get inflation under control and it means stop spending the money we don’t have. Encourage people to get back to work and fix these supply chain issues and do more things here,” Rep. Hartzler said.
As the final days of the primary campaign draw to a close. Congresswoman Hartzler is touring the state as part of her Heartland Tour.
When it comes to making sure Missouri families are in a better position with a “Senator Hartzler” in Washington, the focus is on strong national defense, a secure southern border, working with police local and community leaders to ensure that all Missourians are safe from crime.
“But I also want to see a prosperous America, where the economy is booming, where people have good jobs, and where education is all about the ABCs. And I’m not going to rest, I’m going to put my ethics of farm work where I get up at 5 a.m. and go to bed at midnight for the people I love and serve. And I will fight for Missouri so everyone can feel safe, be prosperous and living the American dream,” Rep. Hartzler said.
In addition to endorsements from Senator Josh Hawley and the Missouri Farm Bureau, Congresswoman Hartzler has also received endorsements from the Cattleman’s Association, Missouri Right to Life and the Corn Growers Association.
